Westwood Parish Rooms BA15 2AF

There is currently a project underway to improve the Westwood Parish rooms adjacent to the church to create a multi-function facility that can be used for a variety of community uses in a pleasant and picturesque setting. The rooms were originally built at the end of the nineteenth century and are in much need of improvement. There are a number of fundraising activities being organised and involvement from everyone in the Westwood Parish is most welcome.

Westwood Parish Room

Work on the building extension is going to plan with plumbing, wiring and plastering in progress. The aim is to complete the building work early in the new year followed by fitting out the kitchen and toilets. The room should be available for use well before Easter, and we are planning a grand opening party in May. Further fundraising events are being planned to allow the the interior fit-out to be enhanced

The groundwork for disabled access has started with the demolition of the wall and paving outside the church west door and should be complete, including the ramp at the church gate, before Christmas.

 The Parish Room Transformation Charity bank account is now closed and all funds have now been passed to the new Parish Room Charity who are tasked with over seeing the renovation.

 The transformation committee wish to thank all the people who so generously donated.

 As you can see from the above figures just over £90,000 has been passed over to the new charity with the expectation of more donations from various trusts.

Westwood Parish Room

 The builder started work on 13th June on converting the building. The trench for the foundations for the extension has been dug and the building inspector is awaited to approve the layout before pouring the concrete. Negotiations are taking place with Wessex water for a permanent water supply and in the meantime a temporary standpipe should soon be installed. A portable chemical toilet will also soon be made available. The contract has also been placed for the disabled access at the church gate and the paved area at the west door

News from the Churchwardens, June-July 2016

 Church Fabric

 The majority of the work specified to be undertaken by the 2011 Quinquennial inspection complete, we are about to move into the next five year cycle, and the church architect will be conducting a detailed structural survey this summer.

 Parish Room Building Progress

 We have been fortunate to have been offered £10,000 from Community First as a Landfill Grant.

 All seven trustees have now been appointed as required by the Charity constitution. They are Chris Edwards (chairman), Jonathan Azis, Belinda Lawrie (treasurer) and David Chalmers (secretary) nominated by the PCC, together with Wendy Manister, Caroline Philpott and Philip Wooster.

 The contract for the main building work has now been placed with Gary Rogers of Melksham who put in a very competitive price. Approval for the archaeological plan has now been given and tenders will shortly be sought for the groundworks including disabled access.

 The Parish Room was cleared on 30th April and all the contents that are reusable have been stored in the Manor barn. We are grateful to Jonathan Azis for allowing us the space and for the many helpers who turned out to sort out and move everything.

 This is my (David's) last Churchwardens' report as I have stepped down after a very interesting and busy five years. Paul Slade of Limes Farm Cottage has kindly agreed to take over the reins and was duly elected at the APCM on 23rd April.

News from the Churchwardens, April-May 2016

 Church Fabric

 Two merlons (castellations) on the north side of the nave have been found to be unsafe and have been removed. We await the stonemason's estimate for replacing them.

 Parish Room Fundraising and Building Progress

 Requests for estimates for the main building work have been sent to six local contractors and their responses are required by 23rd March. At that point we will be able to draw down the £25,000 grant promised to us by the Medlock Trust as well as the £10,000 landfill grant. These together with the money promised to us by the National Trust bring our total of funds raised to just over the target of £150,000. It is a terrific testimony to the faith of the community in the project that we have achieved this in the 15 months or so since we started fundraising. However the project manager has made it clear that there will be many further contingency costs that will arise and so we are not resting from the task.

As we now have the funds to start work the Parish Room will be closed from 1st May until 1st March 2017.  The last of the monthly Wednesday Coffee Mornings will be on 6th April. We are incredibly grateful for the dedication that Viv and Betty Hancock have shown over many years for managing and maintaining the Room.
