Westwood with Iford School News
Hello again from Westwood School . We have had a very busy start to the year since I last wrote to you and also a lot to look forward to in the coming weeks.
Once again our school took part in the West Wilts Dance Festval at the Bath Forum. With a theme of Dare to Dream, children from Orchid class put on a stunning display which was beautifully choreographed and timed to perfection. Furthermore, two members of our school community were asked to compere the evening, linking between acts on stage and showing such tremendous confidence in front of nearly 1000 people! We are all so proud of everyone.
World Book Day was another great success with an array of fantastic costumes. Each class took their own focus for the day and the children had the opportunity to experience some super book based learning.
Our school blogs continue to thrive in their content and learning, so please do take time to have a look and we would love your comments. We now have an Extreme Reading blog too, where children can send us their photographs of them reading in unusual places to promote reading! Find it at reading.westwoodblogs.org.

scarecrows are back!
We are starting to plan for this year’s scarecrow trail
taking place in May half term (Sat 27 May to Sun 4 June). This annual
event is great fun and raises much needed funds for Westwood with Iford School
and Westwood Nursery. We will be deciding on this year’s theme in
February and will let everyone know via posters around the village. You
can like us on facebook (westwoodscarecrowtrail) or follow us on Twitter
(@wwscarecrow) to find out too. As ever, to make the trail a success, we
need people to make scarecrows and / or to host scarecrows in gardens
along the route. If you are willing, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. This year,
we would also be really grateful to anyone who might help us with organising
the trail more generally (putting up posters, arranging advertising, sorting
signage etc.) We are a really friendly group meeting every few weeks
between now and the trail. New members very welcome indeed, so do let us
know by email if you’d like to get involved.
Thanks in advance for your help and
support in 2017!

Residents will remember that back in August last year
B&NES resurfaced this path through the particularly muddy section where
Avoncliff Wood comes down to the river. This work has been greatly appreciated
by the many people who walk along this attractive stretch (at least as far as
the Wiltshire border, where deep mud is again a difficulty in wet weather).
Now, though, there is a further problem with the river bank
alongside the newly resurfaced section, which is being eroded by dogs
scrambling in and out of the water. The B&NES Public Right of Way Team -
which is doing great work for us - is on the case and has applied to the
Environment Agency to install gabion baskets to stabilise the bank.
Until approval comes through, the vulnerable sections have
been taped off and dog owners are asked please to stop your dog going in to the
water at these points. If someone else walks your dog, we would be grateful if
you would pass this message on.Article published: 27 Jan 2017

Some words about parish room progress...
Work on the Parish Room is progressing to schedule with the walls of the extension rising fast. It will soon be obvious from the road when part of the Rectory wall is demolished to create the roadside terrace. After discussion with Diocese Estate Manager, passage through the Rectory drive has now to be controlled and the door into the Rectory grounds is locked, with the key available in the church when disabled access is needed. Work to create the permanent disabled access at the church gate will start in mid-October."
